The blasts ripped through the eastern Ukrainian town of Mogilany, killing at least 10 people and wounding dozens, including children.
Investigators believe the attack was perpetrated by a group of pro-Russia insurgents, but other groups have also claimed responsibility.
Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimea region in 2014 and is accused of supporting separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine, which has left the nation in limbo.
A series of blasts ripped through the eastern Ukrainian town of Mogilany on Saturday, killing at least 10 people and wounding dozens, including children, according to government officials.
Two explosions in the streets of the town, about 180 miles east of the capital Kiev, took place almost simultaneously around 6 a.m. local time, killing seven people and wounding 38, according to Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, who spoke to reporters on the phone Saturday.
Footage from the scene showed debris and pools of blood in the middle of the town streets.
Witnesses also told Reuters that they saw the barrel of a gun next to the body of one of the victims, believed to be an anti-tank missile launcher, and in another case an unexploded grenade was recovered.
A local hospital said on Twitter that at least 10 people were killed and 40 others were wounded in the attack.
In a separate incident nearby, a bomb went off in a car parked next to a private residence. No one was injured in that attack, but it may have been a coincidence, as it took place on the same street and within a few minutes of the first attack, according to Reuters.
It’s unclear if the two explosions were linked.
Ukrainian authorities said they believe the attack was carried out by a group of “local activists,” specifically the pro-Russia insurgents in the area. However, there are a range of competing pro-Russia groups in the region, and Russia has also been blamed for the attack.
Investigators have yet to identify the attackers, but Interior Minister Avakov said that a vehicle believed to have been used in the attack had a license plate corresponding to one of the groups responsible for the attack.
The incident comes a day after Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Russian forces must leave Ukraine’s border. He also warned that “there will be serious consequences” for any further incursions.
“Failed attempts to use the Ukrainian border have resulted in tragic consequences,” Poroshenko said in a statement. “It’s time for a true cease-fire.”
Poroshenko told reporters on Friday that Russia had sent 12,000 soldiers to the border region, saying this is the largest deployment of Russian forces in Ukraine since its independence in 1991.
Russia denies sending any troops into Ukraine, and claims that the influx of Russian
