The accuracy of the automated Shaftam method was verified by HNO 3 -acid digest and compared with ICP-OES analysis of the digests. The results obtained by the 2 methods for digestions of tea samples were very close to each other (Table 6 ). However, the order of magnitude of HNO 3 -acid digestion and ICP-OES was 10(-5) –10(-4). The recovery of determination for all elements was from 96.67 to 103.1% with relative standard deviation (RSD) ranges from 0.9% to 2.3%.
A total of 40 different compounds containing more than 2 elements (27 elements and 3 non-elemental compounds) were identified by HPLC-IonTrap-ESI-MS ( Fig. 6 ). The compounds consisted of 27 different metal ions and 3 elements (H, O, N). All identified peaks, including the relative retention time, the peak area and their corresponding retention time, molecular ion, and their detected elements, are listed in Table 5. Peaks were named according to the retention time of the standard solution. Several ions such as Mg 2+, Ca 2+, Cl 3+, K 4+, Na 7+, Fe 2+, Fe 3+, Cd 2+, Zn 3+, Ni 2+, Mn 2+, Ba 2+, V 5+ and Ti 4+, were only detected in green tea samples, and Mg 2+, Ca 2+, Cl 3+, K 4+ were detected in black tea samples. Major ions include Al 3+, Fe 2+, K 3+, Ca 3+, Zn 2+, V 5+, Cu 2+, Sr 3+, Mo 6+, Mn 2+ and Ni 2+, were detected in both green and black tea samples. Among them, Al 3+, Fe 2+, K 3+, Ca 3+, Zn 2+ were in trace quantities, the levels of which were approximately 5- to 20-fold lower than those reported for green or black tea in studies from other countries ( Table 2 ).
