When you name a Photoshop document, you can use an abbreviation to keep your files manageable. For example, you can use a “psd” to denote a Photoshop document.
Photoshop has many useful tools for working with imagery. Learn all you can from these tutorials and find more in Chapter 5.
Photoshop’s layout is very, well, digital, with images on a canvas, or background, and layers stacked up. This layout is based on a flat background, which can become problematic for images with three-dimensional subjects.
To make working with 3D objects easier, you can create a 3D layer to which you can apply textures, lighting, and other effects, as covered in Chapter 11.
Photoshop includes a host of brushes, filters, and master files (layers) to help you manipulate imagery. Chapter 2 covers Photoshop’s main features, but for more details on their uses, see these sections.
Finally, Photoshop has many add-on programs available for image manipulation. These programs are covered in Chapter 13. These add-ons are third-party programs and are sometimes easier to use than Photoshop itself. See the section “Taking Photos and Creating Images” in Chapter 13 for information on Photoshop-compatible plug-ins.
Following are the most important features that Photoshop has to offer, with useful tutorials to help you understand how they work.
Creating text using Photoshop
Although Photoshop has a text tool for creating text, and text can be dragged into the center of a canvas, it’s hard to create good text by hand. Therefore, Photoshop offers the Text tool for designing text that can be easily applied to layers, including text layers. You can also apply text to a Photoshop document when saving.
You can use Photoshop to apply text to various layers. For example, as shown in Figure 5-1, you can create a text layer and then create a text graphic that can be used to apply text to the layer. You then can resize, move, and even blend the text layer.
When creating text, you can change the font, text size, and text color. However, you cannot change the text’s vertical or horizontal position, as you can in some other programs. You can change the text’s size by selecting the text and using the Size tool.
Here’s how to create text:
1. Select a text layer by choosing Layer⇒Create New Layer and then clicking the text layer.

Using tools in Photoshop Elements to edit photos
Most of the features are available to you to edit photos in Photoshop Elements. Here are a few of the main features:
Figures
Choose from more than 700 shapes (such as squares, circles, polygons) and use them as a guide to draw other shapes. Use the “Stroke” tool or the “Freeform” tool to trace over areas of an image.
Channels
Select a selection, such as black areas of an image, and remove them. You can paint over the channel with the Brush tool.
Artistic Filters
Apply several artistic filters to an image. Filter effects include Motion Blur, Photo Filter, Screen Tone, Posterize, and many others.
Video Enhancements
Convert photos from your camera into Flash Video. You can optimize and export Flash Video as a high-quality swf file.
Stacks
Create up to ten new layers that you can work on using several tools at once. You can reorder, copy, and use any layer. You can clone the layers or use them as a mask.
Layers
Create, merge, and move layers and rearrange them to control the way elements and shapes are presented.
Saving and Sharing
Save a Web Gallery or Create a Web Page. Share your photo albums online or create a custom greeting card.
Brush, Background, Gradient, and Gradient Mesh
You can use the Brush tool to paint over and around an area of an image. You can use the Background or Gradient tools to add new images or colors to the background of an image. You can use the Gradient tool to apply a gradient to the background. You can use the Gradient Mesh tool to create a mesh like pattern on the background.

In human beings, the periodontal tissues attach to teeth at the cementum-enamel junction (CEJ) of the teeth. Gingival tissue interdigitates with the tooth, and promotes the attachment of the periodontal ligament to the tooth. The periodontal ligament is a specialized tissue which is positioned on the free root end of a tooth. It is an integral, continuous extension of the alveolar bone which is usually attached to the cementum, and provides nutrition to the underlying tissues. The periodontal ligament supports the tooth root and regulates the space for the teeth adjacent to one another.
Gingivitis is a mild form of periodontal disease caused by a bacterial infection, which produces a red, swollen and tender tissue surrounding the gum line above the gum line. Gingivitis is a first stage of periodontal disease. The gingiva normally flushes out the bacteria and debris from the mouth that is available for infection. It is possible, however, to accumulate bacterial plaque, which contains mostly gram positive organisms, on the surface of the teeth and gums. This plaque can then produce gingivitis. However, the plaque is generally not strong enough to cause gum deterioration.
Gingivitis can be stopped and reversed by removing the plaque and tartar from the teeth. This is typically done by a dentist, and involves the scraping of plaque and tartar from the teeth, followed by the patient’s proper brushing and flossing procedures. If dental calculus, the deposits of plaque on the teeth, cannot be removed by brushing, it may be removed by a dentist or oral hygienist. Calculus may be loosened from the teeth and brushed or scraped from the teeth with an ultrasonic scaler. Then, a dentist or oral hygienist may mechanically remove the calculus from the teeth.
Severe gum disease is known as periodontitis. It can be a destructive disease which may affect the supporting bone and connective tissue in which the teeth are embedded.
