Sony, Mozilla and Intel have issued a joint statement condemning the app store after Apple disabled the first public version of the Diaspora social network, which it slammed as a threat to the privacy and security of its users.
The trio, which comprised the majority of the developers behind the open source messaging platform, discovered that Apple had revoked their developer certificates and removed Diaspora from the App Store.
The developers were forced to disable the service as Apple had discovered that Diaspora was using the private APIs to access data from users’ personal Facebook accounts.
Diaspora’s developers have now submitted the app for approval. They said they had not previously exploited Facebook’s private API and hoped to resolve the issue with Apple before submitting it for approval.

The companies said they were “extremely troubled” by Apple’s action and warned users not to install the app until it is approved.
“When the Diaspora team submitted their app to the App Store for approval, we believe they included a good faith effort at complying with all of the App Store requirements, including properly authenticating the source code of the app using the private APIs,” the trio said in a joint statement.
“However, we regret to say that upon closer investigation, we have discovered that the app, once installed on an iPhone, has the potential to access data from users’ Facebook accounts, violating the privacy of these users and putting their information at risk.
“We strongly encourage users to not download or install this app until it has been approved by Apple.”

The three companies said they also believe that the app store approval process “only penalizes” open source developers and “disincentives app development and innovation”, and called for Apple to change the rules so that open source developers are not unfairly singled out.
The group also called for the company to allow more than three popular apps in a category to be exempt from being removed from the store, as is currently the case.
