flying the missions has yet another big bonus: the missions are well made and varied enough to keep you interested for months. the hand-drawn cut-scenes are a small but definitely appreciated touch. new missions can be created by the developer using the tools on the engine or modified via the mission editor. despite having only 2 planes to play around with, the level of variety and difficulty is highly satisfying. you can either play through the story missions or indulge in all kinds of crazy airplane races or dogfights with other pilots and ai-controlled planes. flight modes allow the player to change flight altitude and turn radius. later in the game, the additional means of control over the pilot’s landing gear are unlocked as well. this gives you more control over your aircraft’s landing techniques, which is always good.
one drawback of the mission editor is that you need to import your missions from your own saved missions, which means you have to download them from one of the many websites from which combat flight simulator sells them. let me be clear here: the gameplay and graphics in combat flight simulator are among the very best. the gameplay itself is flawless, with a lot of depth. the graphics are gorgeous, some of the most realistic i’ve ever seen, and the fur on your planes makes for some fairly awesome views of the cockpit. combat flight simulator definitely raises the bar for third-person flight sims. it’s truly a marvel of graphical engineering, and the looks of the whole thing are such that you don’t really notice that some of the prettier locations are quite a bit rougher than others.
the quality of the missions are quite good, the missions are well designed and put you in a tricky situation. some missions involve target-locks, some do not, some have more than one target, some have only one target, some attack cannons, some attack rockets.
there are some bugs in the game right now, for example there is a camera bug in some missions where the camera is messed up, aircraft parachute sometimes do not start working correctly, there are no model of the jets yet (there are some fixes, but not all missions are available with fixes), some bombs and rockets get hurt in mid-flight, the plane are sometimes invisible, the windscreen is broken, the the wind cannot work on the ground etc.
my home is not one of the many cities in the dcs world, so i decided to head in that direction. i found a beautiful city with lots of trees. after picking the correct flight line, i found i was at the bottom of the sky with a nose up attitude. although my home is still over a hill, the top of the hill was visible. i turned the car north and headed over the hill. up there is the rest of my small town, with a couple of out buildings and some mountains in the distance. i looked around for a while and saw that i was situated right next to a mountain range, and it seemed like some hills were deeper than the rest. so i decided to fly around the mountain range to investigate it. once i entered the mountains, i started to see a lot of jet streams, so i knew i had found some jetways. these looked cool, and i even found a couple of small airports. i flew around a bit longer, before heading back down to see my home.
